ANTHONY JOHN LAPPIN: “Unicorn’s Horns”, “Socio-philology” and Aragonese: on the transmission of Gonzalo de Berceo’s Sacrificio de la misa
Språk: engelska

In this presentation I will look at two elements: how the dialectal evidence for an eastern origin to the work referenced in the title (a vernacular commentary on the mass from around 1200) has been construed by generations of scholars, beginning with its first speculative study in the eighteenth century, and passing through Solalinde’s edition at the beginning of the twentieth, which set the frame under which the work was discussed. I shall be particularly interested in the accompanying medical recipes in the one surviving medieval manuscript, which require (amongst other things) unicorn’s horn, and were described by Solalinde as that even rarer beast, “a curious mixture of Galician and Catalan”.
